The Lighthouse, Scotland’s Centre for Design and Architecture, is a visitor centre, exhibition space and events venue situated in the heart of Glasgow, just off the Style Mile.

The Lighthouse acts as a beacon for the creative industries in Scotland and promotes design and architecture through a vibrant programme of exhibitions and events.

Built in 1895, The Lighthouse was the first public commission completed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, and is the perfect place to begin a Mackintosh tour of Glasgow. Formerly housing The Glasgow Herald, the building was completed in 1895.

The Mackintosh Centre

The Lighthouse houses the permanent Mackintosh Interpretation Centre or ‘Mack’ Centre, designed by Gareth Hoskins Architects, celebrating Glasgow’s most famous architect and exploring his life and work.

This is the ideal place from which to start the Mackintosh trail. Here you can also see how the former Glasgow Herald building (Mackintosh’s first public commission) was transformed into The Lighthouse, Scotland’s Centre for Design and Architecture.

Take A Tour

A tour of The Lighthouse provides a fascinating insight into the design features and architectural heritage of Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s first public commission.

Whether you are an education group looking for a ‘behind the scenes’ building experience or a visitor wanting to discover more about Charles Rennie Mackintosh, our tours are the perfect way to gain an insider’s guide to The Lighthouse.

For more information on tours visit The Lighthouse website, where you can also take a virtual tour.
